Moulton Eye Clinic was established in 1890 in Fort Smith, Arkansas and has continued to the present day with four generations of ophthalmologists – Dr. Moultons. My great-grandfather, Dr. Herbert Moulton, was the first of the four generations. He was born on January 14, 1861 in Waverly, Illinois and died on January 23, 1951. His early education was at Waverly Seminary in Waverly, Illinois. He then graduated from Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois in 1879. Five years later, he graduated from Chicago Medical College, now the medical department of Northwestern University, in 1884 and did graduate work in Ophthalmology in London and Vienna, Austria. He was one of the first physicians to do eye surgery in the United States. After graduation, Dr. Moulton practiced in Stuart, Iowa from 1884 to 1889 and in Kansas City, Missouri for part of 1890. He moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas in 1890, where he would remain for the rest of his life.

Dr. Herbert Moulton and his wife, Lynn Crockett Moulton, had one son, Dr. Everett Crockett Moulton, Sr. He was born on August 6, 1889 in Stuart, Iowa. He graduated from Northwestern University with Bachelor of Science and M.D. degrees in 1914. He did his graduate training in Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He married Juliette Gates in Wilmette, Illinois on April 6, 1915.

From this marriage, Dr. Everett Crockett Moulton, Jr. was born on August 28, 1916 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Dr. Moulton graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Science degree and Northwestern University Medical School with an M.D. degree. He did his internship at Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois and his Ophthalmology training at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, Massachusetts from 1946 to 1948. In 1948, Dr. Moulton returned to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he has been practicing Ophthalmology since that time.

Dr. Moulton, Jr. married Bettye Triplehorn of Fort Worth, Texas on November 8, 1941. Dr. Everett Crockett Moulton, III, or Dr. Kit Moulton, was born on November 23, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended the University of Arkansas his freshman year of college. He then went abroad to spend his sophomore year at the American School of Switzerland in Lugano, Switzerland. He then attended the University of Kansas where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971. He received his M.D. degree from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in Little Rock, Arkansas on June 8, 1975. From 1975 to 1976 he did his internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri followed by three years of residency training in Ophthalmology at the University of Kansas Medical School Department of Ophthalmology from 1976 to 1979. He returned to Fort Smith, Arkansas to join his father in practice in August 1979 and has been in practice of Ophthalmology since that time.

Our family is very proud of the four generations of Ophthalmologists that have practiced in Fort Smith from 1890 to the present without a day of interruption.
